It sifts archives, flags anomalies in big document dumps, and surfaces patterns no human intern would ever have time to see. The same people telling you AI is an invading force are depending on it as basic infrastructure, like email and spell‑check just without the honesty.
The core ethics issue here is not “AI in journalism.” It is newsrooms lying by omission about how much of their daily workflow already relies on it. When a tool touches reporting, language, or framing, that is something readers deserve to know, the same way they deserve to know if a story came from a wire service, a sponsor, or a political operative.

You acknowledge the tool, you describe the guardrails, and you accept that if something goes wrong, the responsibility sits with the people who chose how to use it.
If newsrooms secretly love AI, they should have the courage to admit it. They should stop performing trauma over “the rise of the machines” while quietly running the machines in the back room. Readers are not children; they can handle the truth that their news is produced with help from code, as long as someone is willing to tell them where, how, and why.
