The logic of this column escapes me.

Canada was overly dependent on the US for its trade.

But now it’s putting everything in the EU basket. How is this better?

Answer: It’s not. It completely avoids going head to head with a bully. Canada could have cut off potash and electricity to the US right now, and that would have been enough to get the White House to back off.

Canada doesn’t have to join the EU in any capacity to make trade deals. It can expand its options while remaining a free agent. While the Prime Minister is jet setting and getting photo ops, that’s not the same as getting things done. This is good PR and free publicity, and that’s not necessary to get things done.

We have telephones, Zoom, and diplomats to do the same things without the fanfare.

But it sure looks like a bold, decisive, and easy answer to all of Canada’s problems. Of course, it isn’t, but if you spend enough taxpayer money travelling the world, you will impress enough legacy columnists to fawn over you.
