Protests Won’t Change the Outcome: Public Sector Jobs Are Now As Vulnerable As Private Sector Jobs.
Hamilton Health Sciences is letting go hundreds of employees.
We already have too many public sector employees making more than what their positions are worth. This has been a way for every level of Canadian government to prop up employment numbers. When a significant number of the Top 1% earners in Canada work for the government, you know there is a serious problem.
Do these people want to keep their jobs? Of course they do, but public sector jobs were always a government hack of propping up the economy. In fact, in Ontario, the government will pay full finding for college programs for out-of-work citizens in healthcare, but not AI, even though healthcare is seeing jobs losses while AI is seeing job gains in the private sector.
But Ontario has always been a peculiar province with peculiar logic that’s 20 years behind the times.
The protests won’t work. Lobbying won’t work now because Canada is in a precarious situation. You have too few people who can survive without government assistance (social services, pensions, child benefit payments, public sector jobs, subsidies) and you can’t build an economy any other way. You need fresh money coming in. You need fewer taxes on working and middle class people because they spend and not hoard, and you can’t do that if they have to pay the lion’s share of taxes.
Mark Carney is using the same hack, just spending more taxpayer money to do it. That’s not a solution. That is doing the same thing and then expecting a different outcome.
If governments want to be useful, make sure private sector jobs aren’t bad jobs and that the rich don’t become the superrich because they can be superrich only at the expense of their workers and customers.
But no one wants to give an inch because all they want is to be the ruler.
