The federal Liberals have been touting having an alliance with the EU until someone bothered to ask about the cost.

As Prime Minister Mark Carney presses toward creating a “unique alliance” with the European Union, Canada’s ambassador is ruling out paying directly into the 27-nation bloc’s budget.

“We would be very selective,” Canada’s incoming EU ambassador Jonathan Wilkinson said in an interview with CBC’s The House airing Saturday morning. “This is not across the board. It’s certainly not membership in the European Union.”

But Wilkinson did say there are programs which may require some degree of funding. As an example, he pointed to the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, which offers loans to member states for defence investments.

This article is trying inoculate the public by minimizing the bill, but once you are in, you don’t pick and choose. This isn’t a la carte. Hard numbers are essential to know before signing on, and I don’t see a single number in this article.

How much will it cost?

That’s a non-negotiable fact before any government can make a decision. If you won’t give the public an actual dollar amount, there is a reason for it, and it’s not a good one, either.
