The Games Corporate Little Boys Play: Cleveland-Cliffs Corporate Blackmail of Canada.
This is a mind game:
With a week until the US midterms, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves is being a little too sure of himself.
This is rich:
“If the Canadian government uses the power they already have … to block or severely reduce imports of galvanized steel into the Canadian market, Stelco can immediately bring back all the temporarily laid-off workers.”
In other words, change policy, and the jobs return. The company’s argument is that import competition makes those operations uneconomic; the political effect is to put pressure on Ottawa through the people losing their wages.
The government will most likely sue Cleveland-Cliffs, and win. They have the company dead to rights with signed agreements.
They can also table punitive laws as a friendly reminder the company is not in friendly territory. Goncalves can’t rely on Daddy Trump to back him up or save him from his ill-advised gambits.
Watching his global humiliation will be amusing, nonetheless.
