When does “efficient living” become the industrial management of human bodies?
A home can be small and still be loved, chosen, beautiful, and workable. But when people have no meaningful alternative, shrinking their lives is not innovation. It is a housing system asking them to fit where a human life does not.

This comparison does not say people and farmed animals experience confinement identically. It examines a familiar industrial grammar: bodies per unit area, movement as inefficiency, technical compliance, and profit flowing upward.

The point: “Minimum standards” can ensure that a body fits inside a space. They do not automatically ensure that a person can live there with dignity.
5 — Search results
Select the things a dwelling needs to support an ordinary human life. Then try to find an affordable unit.
When a society calls enclosure “efficiency,” the question is not whether people can physically fit. It is whether they are still being allowed to live.
This piece argues that housing should support health, privacy, autonomy, and ordinary daily life. It does not claim every compact dwelling harms everyone, or that density is inherently inhumane. Voluntariness, duration, affordability, tenure security, shared-space quality, daylight, ventilation, sound, accessibility, and the ability to leave all shape a resident’s experience.
Research reviewed by the World Health Organization has examined household crowding and health across more than 100 studies. Longitudinal evidence reviews have also associated housing disadvantage—including crowding, instability, poor physical conditions, and precarious tenure—with poorer mental-health outcomes. Associations are not the same as a guaranteed cause for every person or home.
