Twenty-four out of twenty-five major titles recorded year-on-year declines. The Washington Post recorded the worst single decline: a 21.2% drop in average daily print circulation, down to 87,576. The Los Angeles Times fell 19.8%. By July 2025, Fox News was down 30% year-over-year in primetime; MSNBC down 27%; CNN down 42%. Fox News posted a full-year 2025 that was comparatively stronger than its cable peers, yet still showed demographic losses in the key 25–54 advertiser bracket.

News desert expansion: As of 2025, 213 U.S. counties qualify as news deserts, areas with no local news outlet, up from 206 in 2024 and 150 in 2005. Rather, it accelerated a pre-existing systemic failure by demonstrating that the decedent’s immune system, editorial independence, verification standards, institutional courage, had already collapsed.

The Anti-Midas effect is precise: the subject does not transform gold into lead. He transforms lead into horse dung by touching it and revealing that what appeared to be gold was always lead. The decedent was not sound before the exposure. The exposure simply made the rot visible.

Evidence: The Financial Times piece (Exhibit A, referenced above) frames Trump as “remaking America’s media order.” The correct diagnosis is that the existing order remade itself to accommodate him, and the FT’s own polite framing is a symptom of the same disease it is attempting to document.

Finding 2: Billionaire Owner Interference: The Paper Crowns

The decedent’s ownership structure was identified as a primary vector of contamination. Billionaire proprietors, responsive to regulatory leverage and transactional self-interest rather than to journalistic mission, systematically undermined the institutions they nominally controlled.

Jeff Bezos blocked The Washington Post‘s planned presidential endorsement in October 2024, triggering over 200,000 subscription cancellations and multiple editorial resignations. The paper’s daily print circulation subsequently fell 21.2%.

Patrick Soon-Shiong similarly blocked the Los Angeles Times‘s Harris endorsement and proposed installing a so-called “bias meter” alongside AI-generated “both sides” versions of stories, one of which would, by design, be false. The Times saw its print circulation fall 19.8%.

These paper crowns, the prestigious mastheads, the storied editorial traditions, became joke accessories on the heads of owners more concerned with regulatory approvals, personal business interests, and proximity to power than with the health of the institution they purchased.

The correct axiom is not “If you can’t beat them, join them.” It is: if you own a newspaper and instruct it to flatter power, you have not saved it. You have simply chosen a slower method of execution.

Finding 3: The Settlements: The Price of Surrender

The decedent’s corporate parents, terrified of litigation and regulatory retaliation, established a market rate for capitulation that functions as the going price for removing a spine.

ABC News paid $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library to settle a defamation suit over anchor George Stephanopoulos’s misstatement of a jury verdict.

Paramount/CBS paid $16 million to settle Trump’s lawsuit alleging deceptive editing of a Kamala Harris interview on 60 Minutes.

Combined, CBS and ABC collectively paid $31 million. It was preemptive self-censorship, the quietest form of journalistic death.

Finding 4: The Outrage Economy: Addiction as Cause of Death

The decedent’s dependence on the subject “Trump” as a ratings and subscription stimulus was identified as an acute contributing cause. The profession transformed a subject it was constitutionally obligated to scrutinize into its primary revenue engine. The inevitable result: addiction.

In 2016–2020, cable news networks rode the Trump cycle for short-term viewership gains, allowing outrage-as-entertainment to substitute for accountability journalism.

When the stimulus receded or lost its novelty, ratings crashed. When it returned, the same perverse cycle resumed.

The New Republic documented the pattern plainly: “In the critical months leading up to the election, many media outlets took Trump’s denial at face value, publishing fact checks and other commentary that painted Democrats’ warnings about his connection to [Project 2025] as alarmist or misleading.”

Journalistic outlets cannot simultaneously profit from a subject’s outrage value and claim independence from that subject. The profession chose the profit. The profession lost the independence.

Finding 5: The Live Microphone: The Weapon the Decedent Handed Over

Willingness to carry live, unfiltered, uninterrupted statements from the subject, rallies, press briefings, social media posts, Truth Social dispatches, without structural fact-checking, delay, or editorial challenge transformed the decedent from a check on power into a delivery mechanism for narcissistic fiction.

The decedent handed the subject a free microphone. The subject used it to declare the decedent’s illegitimacy. The decedent then carried those declarations live, in real time, to a national audience. This is the clearest possible example of the Anti-Midas effect: the decedent touched the subject and was turned to horse dung by the contact.

SECTION IV: EMPIRICAL RULES: THE STANDARD THE DECEDENT FAILED TO MEET

The following rules constitute the professional baseline against which the decedent is measured. All were violated. The violations are the cause of death.

Rule 1: If the president is happy with your coverage, you are propaganda.
The inverse is also true. If the president is uniformly enraged by your coverage, you may be opposition media, which is not journalism either. The empirical standard requires discomfort on both sides of the partisan divide. Coverage that upsets every administration on its merits is journalism. Coverage calibrated to please any administration is a press release with a masthead.

Rule 2: Access is a contaminant, not a nutrient.
Access journalism, the practice of softening coverage in exchange for proximity, interviews, tips, and exclusives, is incompatible with accountability. The decedent consistently chose access. The resulting coverage flattered sources, protected relationships, and left the public uninformed.

Rule 3: Outrage revenue is incompatible with verification.
When institutional incentives reward emotional activation over factual precision, verification loses every time. The decedent built its second-term Trump economy on outrage, and is now paying the price in declining viewership, cancelled subscriptions, and reader distrust.

Rule 4: When you cover a grifter, follow the money, not the microphone.
Trump Media & Technology Group (Truth Social’s parent) is a paradigmatic case study. The stock functions as a loyalty signalling instrument and a meme asset rather than as a reflection of real business value. The media that should have relentlessly documented this instead spent years airing the rallies, the social media posts, and the emotional spectacle, while performing only episodic reporting on the financial architecture underneath.

Rule 5: Real journalism makes every president hate you eventually.
The trick, as any functioning professional should know, is not to pick a side. It is to apply the same scrutiny to every administration with equal rigour. Pick a side and you become that side’s communications department. The decedent picked sides. Different outlets chose different sides.
