Years ago, a student in one of my creative writing classes gave me a line I\u2019ve never forgotten.
We were talking about political comedy, and he said the difference between Rick Mercer and Jon Stewart was simple: Mercer uses a machine gun, Stewart is an archer. Mercer sprays the crowd and hopes enough shots land. Stewart takes fewer shots, but they\u2019re aimed, deliberate, and they hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canadian politics, it turns out, has given us its own machine gun, its almost\u2011archer\u2026and something worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s given us two bad husbands: Donald Trump and Mark Carney, and a would\u2011be archer, Pierre Poilievre, who lined up on the target, then forgot his glasses and never saw Carney quietly moving the bull\u2019s\u2011eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump is Mercer\u2019s machine gun with the safety permanently off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He believes he\u00a0is<\/em>\u00a0the story, oscillating between American Jesus by day and 80s action hero by night, convinced that history only moves when he kicks in a door or threatens to annex somebody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Canada\u2019s 2025 election, he was the loud ex pounding on the window. His tariffs, his \u201c51st state\u201d musings, his trade\u2011war chest\u2011thumping turned our campaign into a referendum on his tantrums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pollsters and analysts now openly say the \u201cTrump effect\u201d pushed Canadians toward continuity over change, toward technocracy over populism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\u2019s the bad husband who smashes dishes where everyone can see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may still go back to him, but you can never say you didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Carney is the opposite problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If Trump needs to be on camera for every scene, Carney is the man who thinks he can write the entire script from behind it. Trump believes he\u00a0is<\/em>\u00a0the story; Carney believes he can\u00a0write<\/em>\u00a0the story, including the part where Trump\u2019s chaos becomes the device that delivers him power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He was sold as the Antitrump: sane, grown\u2011up, non\u2011combustible, the former central banker and Goldman alumnus who would protect Canada from the demented Monroe Doctrine revival happening to the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the campaign, that story worked. NDP voters strategically stampeded his way. Conservatives saw a 25\u2011point lead evaporate as \u201ctime for a change\u201d suddenly collided with \u201cbut not with that guy in the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Carney is not Jon Stewart\u2019s archer, however. Far from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\u2019s the set designer. He builds the range, picks the angle, and, once everyone\u2019s gone home, quietly walks up and stabs the arrow into the bull\u2019s\u2011eye. The next morning he invites the cameras in, looks at the target and says, \u201cWow. A bull\u2019s\u2011eye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pierre Poilievre was supposed to be the archer in this story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had the momentum: years of double\u2011digit polling leads, a simple \u201ctime for a change\u201d ballot question, and a sharpened \u201caxe the tax\u201d refrain that had already destroyed one flagship Liberal policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He drew his bow at a big, clear target: Trudeau\u2019s record, cost of living, institutional drift, and then the entire range shifted under his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trudeau vanished from the battlefield. Trump stomped onto it. Carney stepped into frame as the \u201cadult in the room,\u201d axed the carbon tax himself, and calmly told Canadians he could manage the one man everyone feared more than him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Poilievre took his shot at the bull\u2019s\u2011eye and forgot his glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He never saw Carney quietly move the target three feet to the left, repaint the circles, and announce that the only shot that mattered was the one labelled \u201cstand up to Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sis boom bah.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Trump treats Canada like a supporting character in his personal epic: a wayward house he might absorb, punish, or rescue, depending on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Carney treats Canada like a house he already owns: he\u2019ll alter the mortgage, redraw the floor plan, and then produce a glossy brochure explaining why this was the only rational decision a responsible partner could make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One husband blows up the living room and screams scripture at the neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other quietly forges your signature on the refinancing documents, calls it \u201cstability,\u201d and explains that only fools would question such sound paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Canada looked at the machine gun and chose the set designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Given the options, that may even have been understandable.
