These days, those are the grown-ups for you.
In an Age of Propaganda, where the Cult of the Chicken Suits are throwing temper tantrums because not all 7.4 billion people agree with their every sentiment, intellectual evolution has been replaced by stagnate hissies and fits.
The ones who demonize anyone who gives facts to disprove their theories, and use sore loser terms such as "whataboutism" and "weaponize."
Tsk tsk, such impossible behaviour from those who are deficient in sensibility.
When I wrote When Journalism was a Thing, I was repulsed by the collective fits and hissies being thrown on that Troll Scroll known as Twitter.
It became a schoolyard where people could bully other people without facts or logic. It is a fantasy to think that you are going to change people's minds or habits by throwing puritanical fits.
They will still believe what they believe -- more so because bullies merely reinforce the idea of feeling like a rebel hero -- but they will keep quiet and go underground with it, blindsiding and sucker punching those bullies who think their temper tantrums are some sort of effective mind control strategy.
Journalism had that stranglehold once upon a time. They gave the illusion of "shutting down" people who did not pledge intellectual allegiance to their decrees.
They never did shut them down because when the Internet came along and the gates were removed, those same people suddenly could bypass the press and finally say their piece without some columnist or pundit meddling by distorting snippets and using the Strawman Fallacy to make their beliefs sound stupid.
Political ideology has become a mask and a ruse to pretend your bullying has some moral merit to it, and that in the intellectual pecking order, you are superlatively superior to your opponents. It has lost its meaning and its worth because people are now shucking their civilized and logical pretences and throwing temper tantrums.
If we had a functioning journalism, they would point all of this out: Left and Right because at this point, it is blatant.
Many of those political shysters actually know their cover is about to be blown, and it is the reason you are seeing more extremist and financially impossible political ideology cropping up, such as the Champagne Socialism that promises a worry-free paradise where you do not have to put any effort or suffer any setbacks because you are a Very Special Person who is Entitled whom no one is to inconvenience.
It is easy to build fortresses by creating false pecking orders reinforced by narratives that we are the Mary Sue heroes and those who are different are villains.
Journalism is still sticking to this narrative, and so is the collectives on social media.
Keep out the facts. Don't tell us that we are ever wrong. Tell us that are theories are right because they are not falsifiable, and any facts used to knock down our house of cards are a weapon.
The static and stagnate thinking is creating a toxic mindset in collectives who think meme posters make them clever or messengers of light.
It is time for those impossible games to be challenged with sensibility. Tantrums are for those who know their fantasies are rubbish, but hope they can pray a lie with the right temper tantrum. Once upon a time resistance meant fighting for your rights.
Now it means throwing a fit because the government won't give you billions of dollars and throw a parade in your honour.
The tantrums didn't work four journalism. It didn't work for j-schools.
People want their passivity to be rewarded.
You want a life? Live it once already.
Journalism could have been thriving right now. It didn't have to die.
But when you confuse a tantrum with righteousness, you have no idea which way is up, and you'll never find your direction...
